Understanding the telecommunications standards process is a crucial element in gaining access to the decision-making process that CITEL opens up to all its members, both governments and associate members. 

The following links and briefs deal with Americas-based standards development organizations.

Asociacion Brasileña de Normas Tecnicas - (ABNT-Brazil) 
(Brazilian Technical Standards Association)

ABNT was founded in 1940. It is responsible for technical standards in Brazil. ABNT is a non-profit organization and its mission is to harmonize the interests of the Brazilian society through standardization of related activities. The main services that this organization provides are the elaboration of technical standards and promotion of their use in the scientific, technologic, industrial, commercial and agricultural sectors among others. 

Data Interchange Standards Association DISA-ASC X12

ASC X12 is an organization founded in 1979 to develop uniform standards for inter-industry electronic interchange of business transactions and electronic data interchange (EDI). It develops, maintains, interprets, publishes, and promotes the proper use of American National Standards and UN/EDIFACT international standards for electronic data interchange (EDI). ASC-X12 has the commitment of providing high-quality standards, simple and efficient in use, manage the evolution of EDI standards and introduce new changes. The final objective is to try to get a unique global group of standards on EDI.

Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Inc. (IEEE)

IEEE is an organization that promotes the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing, and applying knowledge about electrical and information technologies and sciences. It wants to foster technological innovation, enabling member’s careers and promoting community worldwide. Some of the IEEE standards are approved by ISO/IEC JTC1, in which case they are joint IEEE and ISO/IEC JTC1 Standards. Some of these standards are recognized by the American National Standards Institute in the United States, as well as by appropriate processes in other countries. IEEE has about 33,000 affiliate members, a digital library with more than 580,000 documents and holds over 350 conferences each year.

Instituto Colombiano de Normas Técnicas y Certificación (ICONTEC) 
(Colombian Institute for Technical Standards and Certification)

ICONTEC is a private non profit organization that since 1963 has been promoting standardization, certification, metrology and quality management in Colombia.  It is associate to ISO and IEC. It has 1400 affiliate members.

National Resource on Global Standards (NSSN)

NSSN is a data network on developing and approving national, foreign, regional and international standards and regulatory documents. NSSN is used for search and a specific standard, tracking the status of a new development project, or identifying a contact person who can interpret a standard. You can search the compiled standards data, of more than 600 different developers (over a quarter-million records of the world’s leading commercial and government standards). NSSN and its star service are products of the American National Standards Institute.

Normalización y Certificación Electrónica - (NYCE-Mexico)
(Electronic Standarization and Certification)

NYCE is a non-profit organization with a membership of 39 companies that provide support in the electronic, telecommunications and Information Technology areas. The most important services provided by NYCE are elaboration and certification of the Mexican Standards of product security and testing of the Mexican standards of commercial information. NYCE is accredited by Secretary of Commerce and Industrial Promotion of Mexico (SECOFI). The mission of NYCE is to achieve a competitive development in the electronic sector based on international levels of security and quality in goods and services. 

Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers

SCTE is a standards developing organization of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). In order to achieve information services compatibility, SCTE works on standards development in the cable industry. Issues in hardware, software, controls, network architecture, data standard, bit-stream manipulation, audio and video services and statistical multiplexing are addressed to promote system compatibility and interchangeability. 

Standards Committee T1 - Telecommunications

Committee T1 develops U.S. American National Standards and provides U.S. technical input to CITEL and the ITU on subjects related to telephony interfaces between networks and between networks and end users. These include the interconnection and interoperability of telecommunication networks at interfaces with end-user systems, carriers, and information and enhanced service providers, as well as switching, signaling, transmission, performance, operations administration and maintenance aspects. It is an associate member of CITEL PCC.I and is recognized by the ITU-T under Recommendations A.5 and A.6.

Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA)

TIA is a full-service trade organization with membership of over 1,000 large and small companies that provide communications and information technology products, materials, systems, distribution services and professional services worldwide. Its member companies manufacture or supply virtually all of the products used in global communications networks. TIA is also accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop standards needed by the industry and works in cooperation with CITEL (as an associate member of PCC.I and III), the ITU, and others. TIA represents the telecommunications industry through  its subsidiary, the Multimedia Telecommunications Association, in association with the Electronic Industries Alliance.

Telecommunications Standards Advisory Council of Canada (TSACC)

TSACC is an industry-government partnership to develop strategic directions for standardization in the Information Technology and Telecommunications (IT&T) sectors. It recommends strategies for Canadian and international IT&T standards development, implementation and promotion, through the existing infrastructure, which will meet the needs of Canadian users, industry, and government. It provides a bridge between the IT&T industries and related standards communities. It is a focal point for standards information and builds awareness of the role of standards.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc  (UL)

UL is an independent, not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization. It has tested products for public safety for more than a century. Its services help companies achieve global acceptance, whether it is an electrical device, a programmable system, or a company's quality process. UL has five testing laboratories in the United States and subsidiaries in Mexico, Denmark, England, Italy, India, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan.
