Permanent Consultative Committee I:
Telecommunications (PCC.I) will be held in the
Inter-American Development Bank (BID) headquarters in
Washington DC, United States of America from March
12 to 14, 2008. Among the objectives of
PCC.I we highlight the coordination
of standards for telecommunication networks and services, with the aim
of achieving the interoperability of such networks and services within
the region and new policy, regulatory, and
economic matters arising as a result of the rapid evolution of
telecommunications.

The ITU 2007 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-07)
concluded its work last November having made a number of important
decisions affecting satellite users around the world. One of the most
highly debated issues at WRC-07 was Agenda Item 1.4 which tasked ITU
Members to identify additional radio-frequency spectrum for existing
and future International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT).

Cooperation
Agreement between CITEL and ICANN: settling grounds for fruitful
interactions |

ICANN
During the course of 2007,
ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers,
and CITEL, the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission, completed
the process of signing a Cooperation Agreement. Although both
organizations have a long history of cordial communications, this
agreement settles ground for a more stable way to interact with each
other, particularly in terms of information sharing and reciprocate
participation in meetings.

network elements of a company’s operation on the basis of the
company’s accounting and financial statements. These costs generally
consist of the compilation and review of the operators’ historical

Brazil:
ANATEL issues list of small municipalities to have 3G |
|
On Friday, January 18, the
National Telecommunication Agency (Anatel) determined the 2,740
Brazilian municipalities with populations of under 30,000 to be served
by broadband wireless services. The providers winning the bid for the
frequency bands allocated to mobile telephony services, conducted from
December 18 to 20, 2007, in Brasilia, must serve said municipalities
for up to eight years from the publication of the licensing terms and

now has over 120 million cellular telephones |
|
According to data of the National Telecommunication Agency (Anatel),
in 2007, Brazil passed the 120 million mark for mobile telephony
activations. Brazil’s 120,980,103 figure for cell phones recorded in
December represents growth of 21.08% compared to 2006.

appointed Socorro Hernández, President of CANTV, as the new head of
the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology to
replace Jesse Chacón, who will now become the head of the Office of
